I am a big supporter and promoter of buying locally grown produce. Living in Delaware County there are numerous farmers markets where you can buy locally grown produce at almost every day. Media, Bryn Mawr and Havertown are just a few towns that have weekly farmers markets. Besides buying produce at farmers markets, you can also buy local and organic eggs, meat and dairy products. In addition to buying groceries at farmers markets, I am part of the Lancaster CSA (community supported agriculture), where I receive vegetables, fruit and flowers each week. Some of the items I receive I have no idea what they are and have to do research to learn how to use the ingredients. I love to cook, so working with new ingredients is exciting and a learning process all in one. Last night, I created a healthy vegetarian meal using dumpling squash, tomatoes, peppers, onions and herbs that I received all from the CSA. The only ingredients I used out of my own cabinets were olive oil and rice.
I highly suggest joining a CSA, they have delivery locations throughout the Chester, Montgomery, Delaware and Philadelphia Counties, wherever you live, like Downingtown, Havertown or Chestnut Hill, there is a drop off site that is close to you.
